How To Choose The Best Collar For Your Husky

A collar is the one accessory your husky will use the most, so it’s very important to choose the right one. A quick online search will show you thousands of different options, so how have we narrowed it down to just 8 of our favorite dog collars?

Take a read through the main points we look out for when assessing whether a collar is suitable for huskies.

Secure Fit

Making sure a collar is going to correctly fit your husky is probably the most important factor to consider.

Huskies are known for being escape artists. Many huskies will at some point try to escape from their collar so it’s very important to have a secure fit to prevent this.

Before buying a collar you should measure your husky’s neck according to the manufacturer’s size guide. A large size from one company could be the same as a small size from another so never purchase without measuring first.

Different companies also use different measuring points along the neck so it’s worth checking before you buy.

The general rule of thumb is that a dog collar should be tight enough that your husky can’t back out of it, but loose enough that you can fit two fingers between the collar and your husky’s neck.

Durability

Huskies are highly active dogs who love all kinds of exercise – so they need a collar that can keep up with them.

Huskies will pull with large amounts of force, are likely to get their collars wet in puddles and lakes, and may chew their collar if allowed to.

Nowadays there are many different durable materials that a collar can be made from. From synthetic materials like nylon to natural materials like leather, the variety can be a little confusing!

We’ve selected collars that either specify their lifetime (at least over a year) or have great reviews from other owners of active dog breeds.

Preference of Closing Mechanism

This decision is up to you. There are two main ways of closing a collar, either with a standard buckle or with a fancier quick-release squeeze mechanism.

Two dog collars.

Both options have their advantages. The quick-release mechanism is the most common and is generally cheaper to produce (meaning the collar will be cheaper to buy). These collars are great in emergency situations, for example if your husky gets caught in branches, as they are fast to undo.

However, the squeezable nature of these clips means that they are typically made from plastic which is less durable than metal buckles. For that reason, we’ve chosen quick-release dog collars which have an additional security feature, such as a locking mechanism or velcro strap.

Metal hardware is more durable and much stronger than plastic hardware, making buckles more attractive to owners of strong huskies. However, some sensitive huskies might be irritated by the more heavy-duty hardware against their coats.

Comfort

Your husky’s comfort is obviously very important. If your husky is comfortable in their collar, then they are less likely to try and escape from it.

One thing to look out for is the width of the collar. A wider collar will sit more comfortably against your husky’s coat rather than digging into it.

Many collars now include different types of padding to improve comfort during long-term wear.

Don’t worry though, if your husky is uncomfortable wearing their collar we are sure they will be very vocal about it!

Our pick for the overall best dog collar for huskies is the OneTigris Military Adjustable Dog Collar.

For us, this collar ticks all of the boxes. First of all, it’s extremely durable. The thick nylon strap can withstand chewing and all weathers, and the increased width of the collar means that it sits comfortably against a husky’s coat without digging into it.

The solid metal hardware is highly resistant to pulling and the collar uses a double row of metal eyelets meaning the buckling mechanism is extra secure against huskies that have a tendency to escape.

What’s also great is that this collar has 5 adjustable points which makes it much easier to get a secure fit for your husky.

Although this collar is pricier than some of the others available, it’s worth the money as its durability means you will have to repurchase it less frequently.

Don’t just take it from us though – this collar has over 4500 5-star reviews on Amazon!

The Black Rhino Hybrid Collar is one of our tried and tested favorites. We’ve bought this collar several times for our huskies and will continue to repurchase it!

It’s made with comfortable neoprene padding that protects your husky’s coat and won’t rub against their skin during long exercise sessions.

It’s waterproof and the neoprene dries rapidly meaning it’s also odor-resistant – this collar is ideal for huskies that love to play in the pool!

What’s particularly important to us is that it includes reflective stitching along the centre of the collar. This means your husky will be extra visible to vehicles in low-light conditions.

What stands out for us is the hardware. This collar has hybrid metal/plastic hardware, allowing it to be both lightweight and extremely durable. Some reviewers say that this hardware is not suited for short-coated dogs, but as owners of huskies we’ve never experienced any problems!

For this collar, we recommend purchasing either a size medium or large to get the best fit, depending on your husky’s size.

Julius-K9 has made a reputable name for itself in the pet accessory world, so it’s no surprise to find one of their collars on our list.

We relied heavily on the Julius-K9 Collar with Handles whilst training our husky puppies. The handle is a great way to gain control over your husky quickly in unfamiliar situations. For us, it made socialising at the dog park a much easier process!

Don’t be put off by the push clip release mechanism. Although some huskies can easily get out of these kinds of collars, Julius-K9 are one step ahead. They’ve included an extra locking mechanism in which the strap is threaded back on itself and secured with strong velcro. It’s easy to secure as an owner but tricky for a husky to try and escape from.

The collar is available in a wide range of bright colors which will ensure your husky is easily visible in all locations.

The Daihaqiko heavy-duty dog collar is one for those of you with huskies who like to pull. This 100% genuine leather collar can resist 350 lbs of pulling power and won’t deteriorate from repetitive outdoor use.

This collar is truly built to last. Its metal-alloy hardware and D-ring can withstand rust and corrosion, so no need to worry about your husky wearing it in the water! Daihaqiko claims that the collar should last from three to five years with normal use, and its excellent reviews certainly back that claim up.

We found that a size large is best suited for most huskies, but check your husky’s neck size against the chart before purchasing.

5. Riparo Genuine Leather Padded Dog Collar

If your husky has sensitive skin that is easily irritated then the Riparo Genuine Leather Padded Dog Collar is a great option.

This collar has soft sheepskin padding which sits comfortably against a husky’s coat and doesn’t cause irritation, unlike some synthetic materials. The collar is also wider than others available meaning it won’t dig into a husky’s long coat.

The collar itself is handmade from 100% cowhide leather making it long-lasting and highly durable against the elements.

Riparo also donates 1% of all sales to no-kill shelters and animal rescues meaning each purchase is helping another dog find a better life. What more could you ask for?

6. Embark Pets Rope Dog Collar

Hand spun with a beautiful leather trim, embossing, and strong metal components, this is a beautiful, classic collar.

Pros:

  • Withstands up to 670lbs of pulling strength
Cons:
  • Fur can get caught in the rope section if worn 24/7.

The Embark Pets Rope Dog Collar is one of the strongest on the market. It’s able to withstand a huge 670 lbs of pulling force making it suitable for the strongest of huskies.

These collars also have a timeless look which we find gets frequent compliments from other dog-walkers. The classic leather paired with the strong cotton rope is a great combination for both looking great and staying secure.

One issue with this collar is that the rope part can be quite irritating against a husky’s neck if worn 24/7. I found that whilst sleeping, some of my husky’s hairs were getting caught in the rope fibres. For that reason, I recommend using this collar for exercise only.

This collar is less adjustable than others on the market due to the rope portion, so be sure to measure your husky’s neck according to Embark Pet’s guide before purchasing.

7. Collardirect Quick-Release Reflective Dog Collar

CollarDirect Reflective Dog Collar with a Quick Release Buckle

The collar comes in a wide range of bright colours and has two reflective strips sewn in the whole way around.

Pros:
  • Very reflective and highly visible
  • Large D-ring for tags
  • Wide strap that doesn’t dig in
  • Affordable and long-lasting
Cons:
  • Reviews mention that colours fade over time

If you own a husky that is going to chew through its collar no matter what, then you’ll likely need an affordable option. In our opinion, the best affordable husky dog collar is the CollarDirect Quick-Release Reflective Dog Collar.

This collar, despite its low price, has many great features. It’s available in a wide range of colors and is highly reflective making it ideal for keeping track of your husky in low-light conditions.

The buckle has a smart-lock mechanism that is easy to handle as an owner but prevents accidental release during walks and exercise.

The collar is also waterproof and weatherproof. We know other husky owners who keep a small stock of these collars to be used specifically when their huskies are going to be in the water. Their low price makes them ideal for getting a bit rough around the edges, but the bright colors keep our huskies visible from a distance.

8. Blueberry Pet Adjustable Patterned Dog Collar

Blueberry Pet Spring Scent Inspired Adjustable Dog Collar

Available in a huge range of patterns, the collar not only looks good but is also made to last.

Pros:
  • Wide range of available patterns
  • Large D-ring for tags
  • Has an easy-to-open buckle
  • Matching accessories are available
Cons:
  • Some reviews mention inconsistencies between size guide and actual size of the collar

We know that many owners like their huskies to look their best – and rightly so! The Blueberry Pet Adjustable Patterned Dog Collar gives owners a chance to let their dog’s personality shine through.

This collar is available in many different patterns, and their online shop is regularly updated with new designs so be sure to look around before deciding.

Not only does this collar look great but it’s also designed to be comfortable for your husky to wear. The collar is made from high-density polyester which will be gentle on your husky’s coat but still very durable.

Our one critique is that the buckle is not as strong as others available on the market. For most huskies this collar is perfectly suitable, but if your husky is known for trying to escape from their collar then this is one of the easier ones to escape from.

A Note On Shock Collars

We personally advocate against using shock collars on huskies. While they can be very effective training tools, it’s very difficult for the average dog owner to use them effectively and safely. If a shock collar is needed, it should be used under the direct supervision of a dog behaviorist as a last resort to deal with severe behavioral issues.

In summary

We love the OneTigris Military Adjustable Dog Collar for huskies thanks to its extreme durability, secure hardware, and great adjustability options. Whilst some huskies may have more specific requirements, the OneTigris collar is a great all-rounder.
